In a scene at the beginning of the First Doctor adventure “The Chase” (1965) The Doctor and his companions watch Shakespeare in conversation with Elizabeth 1. In the classic adventure “City of Death” (1979), the Fourth Doctor claims to have helped Shakespeare write Hamlet. What is truly astounding is that these encounters are only a few of the many the Doctor has actually had with the Bard.
BBC Books has rediscovered notebooks, long thought lost, put together by William Shakespeare in late 1599 in which he documents the impact of the Doctor on his life and work. In the notebooks we see the original notes for Hamlet including a very different appearance by the ghost. They include original versions of great lines from the bard-“Exit pursued by a Dalek”, and “To reverse or not to reverse the polarity of the neutron flow”. The notebooks show how the faeries of A Midsummer Night’s Dream were originally imagined, and how the stage directions were later adjusted to remove references to a mysterious blue box and “the strangest sound akin to wheezing and groaning that ever did assail the ear”. Shakespeare notes that it was as if the Doctor had somehow gone back through Shakespeare’s life, removing any references to himself and the strange world of wonders and magic that he inhabited.
