The Arctic wolf inches towards you. Like you, he is torn between fear and curiosity. His instinct leads him towards the scent of your leather boots. Your instinct is to reach out to this curious white canine. Suddenly, he snarls, and you’re face to face with a wild animal. For years, photographer Jim Brandenburg has observed lone wolves by moonlight, Arctic wolves leaping onto ice floes, and wolves hunting and foraging for food. Packs of gray wolves surround his house in Minnesota. Let him lead you on an intimate journey through their mysterious world, making a persuasive case for the protection of this threatened species, and showing how wolves and humans can live together.
Jim Brandenburg is a published author and a photographer of children’s books and young adult books. Some of the published credits of Jim Brandenburg include Face to Face With Wolves (Face to Face with Animals), Scruffy: A Wolf Finds His Place in the Pack.
“The wolf staring right out from the cover and the paw prints on the end papers leave no doubt as to the content in this book. The Brandenburgs are obvious lovers of wolves—Jim has written many of the books listed in the “Find Out More” section. People are only now realizing the importance of ecological balance and the role of wolves, after they were nearly wiped out. The reintroduction of wolves in some areas has helped to keep the deer and elk herds under control and has strengthened them, because wolves tend to attack the weakest members of the herd. Farmers have fought the reintroduction, and hunters want them off the endangered list so they can be hunted, and so the author warns that the battle is not really over. Readers will be intrigued about life in the pack—wolves are social animals that care for the young and old and live in a definite hierarchal family. The authors have provided maps showing habitats and stunning, full-color photographs of wolves of different types and ages. The last four pages describe how you can help protect the wolves, while the section titled “It’s Your Turn” offers suggestions for seeing and learning more about these animals. The “Facts at a Glance” section offers factual information for report writers—the scientific and common names for wolves, types, size, lifespan, special features, food sources, threats, and a map showing the decreasing range of wolves in the United States. The closing pages provide information about books and articles, web sites, a short glossary, and an index, plus some research and photographic notes.”
