China is changing fast. Seemingly overnight it has becomean economic and political powerhouse on a global scale. Although it is therecent rise of China that makes the daily news, the last century saw otherlarge and rapid changes: the fall of the last imperial dynasty, the failure ofthe Nationalist government, and the ascent of Mao Zedong and the new China. Howhave these changes affected the land and people of China? Can lessons from thepast give us insights about the future? For six years, Robert Moseley lived andworked as a conservation scientist in the mountains of northwest YunnanProvince. As part of that work, he set out to answer these questions and applythe results to the conservation of nature and culture. Northwest Yunnanprovides a compelling backdrop to explore these issues, with its spectacularmountain environment and diverse ethnic cultures that were once remote, but arenow confronted with unprecedented rates of change. Following in the footstepsof early twentieth century explorer-photographers, Moseley and colleaguestraveled extensively through this region rephotographing original scenes andcomparing them with modern conditions. In Revisiting Shangri-La , he uses thiscollection of repeated photographs as a powerful visual tool to portray thedynamic and resilient character of people and the land and to communicatefuture opportunities for conservation.
