King Gesar is an oral epic widely sung and performed today by the broad masses of Tibetans. It has been preserved, spread, and expanded, with an ever-growing length and ever-enriched contents because of the balladeers, or “Zongken” in Tibetan.
A Zongthang is a Thangka of stories about the epic King Gesar. The folk ballad singers painted stories of King Gesar and pictures of characters to make their performances more striking and to attract a wider audience. During their performance, they would hang the pictures and explain the plots shown on the Thangka.
In the Tibetan inhabited areas of China, King Gesar is worshipped as the God of War, as well as the God of Wealth, by all nomadic people. The paintings and statues of King Gesar “are very popular in the Amdo and Kham Areas, and in the Dege Area, in particular, almost each of the families worships him as God”. All of the books about the life and deeds of King Gesar, whether hand-copied or woodcut, are equally worshipped and treasured. In those areas, people believe that keeping at least one copy of King Gesar at home can bring in fortune and dispel disasters.
May this album good luck to the readers!

POSTSCRIPT
With the encouragement and protection from the God of Demons, King Sadan ordered Prince Gyulha Thoju to be the vanguard to seize the salt sea at once. When the concubine Baima Chuzhen heard the news, she rushed to persuade the king and prince not to do so. But neither of them listened to her.
After conquering the State of Hor, King Gesar began to repair Dadse City and made the palace more magnificent. He lived together with his concubines in the palace to administrate the state. The people of the whole state lived and worked in peace and contentment. One day Brahma sent over instructions. Following the instructions, King Gesar summoned Merutse, and Merutse took with him 31 arrows given to him by King Gesar and 30 heroes of Ling and rode his purplish-red-winged steed to the salt sea. He captured the prince of Jiang, Gyulha, by stratagem. Gyulha surrendered, and King Gesar appointed him Great Hero.
King Gesar personally led the mighty army of Ling to an encampment near the salt sea. After scouting, the heroes of different routes decided to win the battle through strategy. Merutse went alone once again to the side of the salt sea, where he came across three pioneer generals of Jiang. He lied to them, saying the King of Hor had sent troops to seize Zhubmo, but the troops, totaling 1,200,000, were all killed by King Gesar. Only he was left, and he met Prince Gyulha and the two of them shot dead nine wild oxen, and Prince Gyulha asked them to send someone to help carry the wild ox meat. The army commander Zhuza of Jiang ordered Jewei Thukar to go. But Jewei Thukar was killed by Danmar.
After succeeding twice, Merutse refused the advice of the CounselorGeneral and King Gesar and went to deceive the Jiang troops for the third time. But this time he aroused suspicion and was caught.
