Timothy July has been having nightmares. About his brother, who is in a coma after being wounded in Iraq; about his best friend, Stuart, who is behaving like a jerk; about the old biology specimens in jars lining the walls of his classroom; and about Abigail, the new girl who seems to be a magnet for trouble. Or perhaps she is the cause.
Suddenly Timothy’s nightmares are coming true. His brother, his face decaying, approaches Timothy on the street. Stuart ends up in the hospital, terrified that monsters are stalking him. And the specimen jars are tormenting not only Timothy but his teacher as well.
What is the secret in Abigail’s past that is the key to these horrors? And can Timothy figure it out before his nightmares become a deadly reality? A follow-up to the well-received Stone Child, Dan Poblocki’s second novel will have his readers mesmerized until the last page–and sleeping with the lights on.
Beginning in fifth grade, DAN POBLOCKI would gather his friends after school, frightening them with tales of ghosts, monsters, and spooky places. When his mother began to receive phone calls from neighborhood parents, warning that her son’s stories were giving their children nightmares, Dan decided to write the stories down instead. Dan now battles his own neighborhood monsters in Brooklyn, NY.
“Eighth-grader Timothy July has problems; first, his parents are forcing him to keep a family secret; and second, he is having uncontrollable nightmares. In fact, the nightmares are becoming so real that they appear to be happening in the daytime when he is wide awake. When partnered on a history project with the strange, new girl in class, Abby, he discovers that she, too, has secrets and nightmares. His secret and his new friendship with Abby put a strain on his friendship with his former best friend. So, together, Timothy and Abby must find the reason behind the curse that is making their lives so miserable. The plot is complex, involving Egyptian mummies, a mysterious author of young adult mysteries, a professor who went mad and died in jail, an isolated lighthouse, a creepy museum, and living nightmare after nightmare after nightmare. The book’s jacket describes the plot as “a thrill ride” and “bone-chilling,” apparently just the sort of story to drag young readers into the vortex and satisfy any Pirates of the Caribbean or Indiana Jones junkie. The plot keeps twisting and turning right up until the last page when, finally, all is explained and Timothy and Abby can return to living satisfying young lives. It does have a moral message regarding the relationship between fear and blame and the futility of revenge. For readers looking for a wholesome but action-packed adventure, with a theme that is not didactic, this is a book that may well hook young students into reading.”
