3. Backstories in Hong Kong
The year 1989 opened a new chapter in Jet Li’s career, when he accepted an offer from Hark Tsui, a renowned director and producer, to work in Hong Kong. The city brought him spotlight and unexpected troubles. His new life there was no less thrilling and gripping than what may appear in any gang film.
When shooting the film Dragon Fight , Jet Li met Nina Li Chi and David Law, son of director Wei Lo. Law frequently visited the studio, and was deeply impressed by Jet Li’s fighting skills. He believed the young actor was a potential superstar. In the hope of becoming Li’s agent before anyone else did, Law tried his best to make friends with the introverted actor of his age. The two young men got on fairly well, and their friendship led to a tenyear talent agency contract.
The rising director Hark Tsui visited Li upon hearing that Li was also in the U.S. They soon discovered that they shared similar ideas on martial arts films. Tsui then recommended Li to the management at Hong Kong Golden Harvest, and redesigned the character of Wong Fei-hung with Li. Tsui’s unfettered imagination and cinematic flair had a deep influence on Li. But at times, Li found himself in a clash with the director over some of his ideas. A good example was the hero’s Shadowless Kicks. When Tsui designed a move of seven kicks before landing, Li opposed to it, in that it might strike the audience as too fictional. Who could ever do that? Tsui, on the other hand, was insistent and decided against all objections. Thus Wong Fei-hung ’s incredible kicks were born.
In their debate, Li argued from a martial artist’s view, “Don’t you find the Shadowless Kicks a little bit unlikely?”
“You forgot one thing,” Tsui replied. “Once the audience recognizes our hero, they accept whatever he does, however superhumanly he may behave. A little exaggeration will hardly do any harm, because the audiences are here for a good story, and they don’t care if his kicks are possible. ”
Tsui’s support enabled Li to fully develop his potential. And Li also held great gratitude to Tsui for his recognition and appreciation. Indeed, it was Tsui that provided him the opportunity to make a comeback to his past glory from the low point of being an anonymous martial arts trainer.
Preface
Preface
A Man of Paradoxes
Li Lianjie, also known as Jet Li, was born in Beijing, China on April 26, 1963. Showered with honors, he is a man who is in many ways a paradox: he is a philanthropist who lives a luxurious life in a mansion; he is a patriot who has emigrated from his birth country; he is both a passionate and fickle lover. Contradiction is his name tag.
He is also a loner, constantly making theatrical gestures in his speech. He often looks at life from the perspective of Buddhism or philosophically, claiming that he lives each day as if it were his last. He thinks in detachment while lives in extravagance. He sees through the vicissitudes of the world, while devotes himself to them.
When confronted with pressure, disapproval, comparison, isolation or provocation, Li just remains silent till it all subsides, and then laughs it off, finding inner peace from Buddhism.
A Buddhist and a mammonist, a billionaire in “dire poverty” and a warm-hearted but apathetic philanthropist, Li is more like a solo dancer absorbed in his own world, lonely and arrogant.
Li’s tale is one of wonder, hardship, wisdom, ambition and contradictions. Wonder in that he has got out of the jaws of death several times, escaping uncanny people and dramatic events unscathed; hardship in that he has suffered serious injuries in his training and performance that nearly made him want to give up; wisdom in that he skillfully survived assassinations by dark forces from the precarious entertainment circle; ambition in that he aspires big for his performing career as well as his charitable causes; and contradictions in that he talks in an unworldly way but acts pragmatically.
If, as Shakespeare put it, “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players,” then what is it that Li is playing on the stage of his own?
Epilogue
Jet Li, A Remarkable Man
One may think that Jet Li is easy to understand: he is a wushu champion, a movie star, and a philanthropist. But, in fact, he is an enigma. He calls on others to donate to charity, yet he himself lives in a mansion worth hundreds of millions. He takes great care of his beloved wife Nina Li Chi, yet he left his first wife and their children in the first place. He often expresses his desire to retire from acting, but he keeps starring in expensive movies.
No one is easy to understand, not even Li, the pious Buddhist. Perhaps it is the things he has gone through and the near-death experiences that he has made him what he is today.
In recent years, every entertainment reporter knows that it is difficult to squeeze any information out of him about his new movies, because he always talks about One Foundation when he is interviewed. Every actor knows that when approached, Li will sell his One Foundation and try to persuade them to donate. Every distributor knows that so long as they agree to donate to One Foundation, Li will attend any press conferences for their new movies, no matter how shoddy they are. Whenever a big natural disaster occurs in China, Li is among the first to arrive on the scene with One Foundation’s relief supplies.
Li may continue to puzzle with more contradictions, and he may be still in search of life’s true meaning, with or without success. He has morphed into a world-famous kung fu star and a devoted philanthropist from a little boy that grew up in Beijing’s hutongs practicing wushu . We must not overlook this great change, when we try to decipher him. People may doubt his sincerity and goodwill, but there is no doubt that he has pursued and realized his dreams with great efforts and at huge costs. Such a man deserves to be acknowledged and respected.
